Acupuncture As a Cure For Stress


Acupuncture is a therapeutic practice that has been used for thousands of years as a way to relieve pain throughout the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine, it works by utilizing acupuncture points located throughout the body on the meridians through which Qi - or life energy - flows. Various needles are inserted into these points throughout the body to relieve pain related to stress, headaches, and a variety of other ailments. While there is no scientific explanation for how or why acupuncture works, hundreds of millions of individuals around the world regularly use acupuncture, and it has been in use since at least 2,600 BC, as referenced in the Shiji, or Records of the Grand Historian, written by Sima Qian over a period of time from 109 to 91 BC.

With at least 4,500 years of use behind it, acupuncture has a long history of proven effectiveness, despite the fact that scientific research has yet to definitively understand the reasons behind its effectiveness. For many individuals it remains a controversial practice, especially among medical researchers and clinicians due to the fact that none of the benefits have been able to be proven scientifically, with many of them concluding that the effectiveness of the treatment is largely a result of the placebo effect. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization published a list showing that acupuncture was effective for the treatment of at least 28 different conditions, and anecdotal evidence to suggest it could be effective for treating several dozen others.

Whether or not acupuncture has scientifically provable results does not change the fact that it helps hundreds of millions of individuals around the world deal with various pains and stress factors in their lives. It first became popular in the United States after an article in The New York Times in the 1970s by James Reston, who underwent an emergency appendectomy while in China and was treated during the postoperative process with acupuncture as a way to relieve the pain, which inspired the first national group focusing on acupuncture in the United States, called the National Acupuncture Association. Despite the fact that it is not clinically proven by modern science, the IRS allows acupuncture to be deducted as an actual medical expense, and has since 1973.

How Does it Work?

The stress response is nothing more than a particular set of biochemical reactions within the body that occur when something stressful happens, whether mentally or physically. During these times, the body releases a series of chemicals in the blood which set into motion a complex chain of events that include increased heartbeat, increased breathing rate, high blood pressure, and increased muscle tension. This is also described as an adrenaline rush, or the fight or flight response. During these periods of time our bodies are given additional strength, energy, and alertness to deal with whatever stressful situation has occurred, and while over short periods of time there is no damage, if the stress is allowed to become chronic or out of proportion, this normally healthy response can become pathological in nature. For example, increased alertness can cause mental strain, anxiety, insomnia, or exhaustion, while increased breathing rates can lead to panic attacks, and an increased heart rate can lead to palpitations. Then there is the side effect of enhanced muscle tone which can lead to muscular tension, pains, and tremors.

In the 21st century, many individuals live in an almost constant state of stress, continually triggering one event after another, leading to a chronic cycle of stress where the body's natural energy reserves are depleted, and consequences set in. Some of the most common symptoms of a stress overload include headaches, backaches, skin disorders, sleeping disorders, or even gastric problems, while psychological side effects can occur as well, ranging from depression to anxiety, memory loss, reduced cognitive function, poor concentration levels, and a lack of confidence. Chronic stress can lead to long-term health problems such as strokes, high blood pressure, and increased risks of cardiovascular diseases, so the importance of reducing stress levels cannot be overstated. One of the first steps to a long life is a heightened sense of well-being, or an elimination or decrease in life stress.

Acupuncture is beneficial because it helps regulate muscle tension and other various physical stress-related factors in the body. One does not need to believe in Qi or energy forces to believe the 4,500 years of clinical evidence. Whether or not medical science can prove it, acupuncture has a proven ability for decreasing heart rates, lowering blood pressure, and adding a tranquilizing effect for individuals suffering from stress. Acupuncture can help relieve feelings of anxiety and depression by stimulating muscle groups in the body, which stimulates the release of chemicals in the body that work against the stress-related chemicals, thus eliminating stress.

Perhaps one of the most important aspects of acupuncture is the fact that it is not a pharmaceutical, and the methods by which it creates an increased sense of well-being are completely natural, using nothing more than the body's own reactions to stimuli in much the same way as massage therapy. Acupuncture can increase circulation, and when used for symptoms of repetitive stress injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome or wrist tendinitis, it causes pain-killing endorphins to be released which counteract the pain in the body, and once pain is gone, the stress level decreases. This can work for individuals suffering from back pain, knee pain, or any type of pain within the body. It also helps relieve tension headaches and works in much the same way as massage therapy, inducing a feeling of calm and peacefulness in the patient, which allows for a transition into a stress-free lifestyle. o Generalized Anxiety Disorder: This is the most common form of anxiety disorder in children that results due to fear, worries or unnecessary stress factors. What is stress?

Stress can be defined as any type of change that causes physical, emotional or psychological strain.

Stress causes increased muscle tension which has a direct effect on increasing your pain levels. Therefore, reduction of stress and muscle tension helps to reduce your pain. Stress saps your energy and reduces your ability to cope with the pain and your life.

Types of stress

Acute stress - a very short-term type of stress that can either be positive (like excitement at preparing for a deadline) or distressing (what we normally think of when we think of 'stress'); this is the type of stress we most often encounter in day-to-day life (e.g. flying, when you have a fear of it or having to make a presentation to colleagues when you are naturally shy.)

Chronic stress - the type of stress that seems never-ending and inescapable, like the stress of a bad marriage, being a carer for a terminally ill parent or stress in the workplace, (coping with these types of stress can lead to burnout/ill effects on your health unless there is some stress management.)

Health implications of chronic stress

When faced with chronic stress, people begin to have physical symptoms. At first they can be relatively mild, like chronic headaches and frequent colds.

Chronic stress: how it affects your body and how you can stay healthier

American and Canadian researchers conducting a huge study on the effects of stress on the immune system recently concluded that it all depended on the type of stress and how individuals responded to it. They examined 293 studies involving 19,000 people.

Chronic stress - the most damaging

The most damaging type of stress they found was chronic stress, caused, for example, by unemployment or caring for a relative with mental illness - both situations which have no end in sight. These have damaging effects on the whole immune system. The key to it all, the researchers concluded, was whether the stress was never-ending or short-term. It was discovered that even the extreme stress of losing a partner was nowhere near as bad as chronic stress.

Chronic stress doesn't suit us as we get older

Another thing that was discovered, not surprisingly, is that the older we get the more susceptible we are to stress. Lawrence Whalley, Professor of Mental Health at Aberdeen University and author or 'The Ageing Brain' says: 'As we grow older -between about 45 and 55 - our stress responses become more exaggerated.'

He says that it's a fact, being prone to great anxiety in stressful situations increases with age. "All old people (50 plus) find stress very unpleasant: even the kind of stress a young person might find intoxicating."

Professor Stephen Palmer of City University in London and the Centre for Stress Management says: "I would say stress is always bad. A little bit of pressure can get you out of bed in the morning and give you focus. As you grow older there is more likely to be long-term chronic stress (eg. caring for relatives, ill health etc.) - the very type that is bad for you."

Anxiety and the Quest For Perfection - Fuhgedaboudit!


As we begin to recover from panic disorder, any mind variance for that matter, we spend so much time monitoring the frequency and intensity of our symptoms. As humans, pain isn't our thing; so we're always looking for signs that our suffering is coming to an end. And, naturally, we're hopeful, and our expectations are high.

That's understandable, and the quest for wellness is a healthy sign of recovery. However, if we're not careful we can easily fall into an obsession with the very unrealistic and destructive goal of achieving perfection.

To this day I have symptoms of anxiety. Now, I don't have panic attacks or other life-interrupting demons; however, little annoyances occur from time to time. And probably always will. Don't forget we may well have a genetic predisposition for panic, anxiety, depression, etc.; on top of which lies all sorts of additional goofy neural routings driven by our life experience.

Okay, sure, we might like for this not to be the case, but that just isn't realistic. I mean, ask an alcoholic if a cold beer wouldn't taste good once in a while, or if sharing a glass of wine with someone special wouldn't be nice. As a recovery alcoholic of 25 years I can personally tell you the answer is yes, but it's a non-issue. I'm not going to drink, and that's all there is to it. So why get hung-up over a few very human thoughts?

Sometimes we breeze through our day with very few, if any, symptoms of anxiety, only to have one or two sneak up later. Yes, it can make us angry and disappointed; however, we have to come to realize just how very unreasonable and unfair we're being toward myself.

We can't expect perfection because, frankly, we won't find it. Chances are we'll have symptoms and little annoyances for the rest of our lives. So what! Over time we learn to manage and accept them for what they are. And that's because we've gained insight as to the context within which they occur, and know precisely what to do about them. In time they become very minor inconveniences, even ongoing reminders of our humanity and the character building value of adversity.

Think about those who suffer from chronic back pain, asthma, diabetes, and on and on. Anxiety can be inserted right in there. What, just because we suffer from a mind variance, that's different? No way. Pain is pain.

Take some time to think about your pet self-perfection peeves and how you've learned to accept and manage them. And if your pondering reveals you're a bit low on the insight scale, think about what you can to purchase a piece of reality. Why not write these things down?

Let's go easy on ourselves. Perfection is totally unreasonable and not at all necessary in securing a happy and peaceful existence. Indeed, the quest for perfection only brings disappointment and distress.

Breaking Up Pain - It Still Hurts Like Crazy, Why?


Let's face it, breaking-up hurts and it hurts badly!

The first few days or weeks after a break up are especially the most painful of all -- the pain feels like it'll never end.

-- You cry a lot

-- You feel lost and alone

-- Everything you see and hear reminds you of him/her and your time together

-- You feel hopeless and have a hard time imagining a happy future

-- You lose your appetite and interest in everyday activities

-- You feel real pain and ache in your heart - intense sadness, jealousy, disappointment, rage, or even downright denial.

-- Your body aches all over and you have cramps, nausea, and dizziness.

-- You keep replaying the painful moments of the break-up

-- You feel sorry for yourself

These are all very normal reactions to a break-up even if the relationship was the worst relationship in the world. Thankfully, these intense torture gradually eases and most people with time find that it hurts less and less. They are able to think more calmly about what has happened, and at some point be "emotionally available" for other experiences.

Looking at it this way, it does seem that time indeed does heal all wounds even though some wounds take longer than others. But it's been weeks, months and even years after the break-up and you are still so overwhelmed by the experience that you are unable to recover and bounce back. Why can't time heal your wounds too?

From personal experience and working with others over the years, I strongly believe that it is not the ticking of the clock that heals the pain but rather the things we do or fail to do during that time that make the difference.

Any of these attitudes, thought patterns, behaviours or emotional processing styles can potentially hinder time's attempts to get on with the work of healing and moving on, or healing and trying to re-create a new relationship with one's ex.

1. Re-running the break-up over and over again, and rehearsing arguments you have had, again and again thinking that maybe something will make sense eventually and you will come to terms with the intense feeling of emptiness and loneliness. But often times what this seemingly rational thing to do does is keep you on the roller coaster of bitterness, anger, guilt, confusion, shame, embarrassment, disappointment and shock -- and can take you into the depths of depression.

2. Thinking that your happiness, sense of identity and your life itself is all tied to this one single person and now it's all over. Just thinking about the break-up stirs deep regret -- not regret about just losing your loved one but regret for all the "'wasted" time' and for all the lost dreams for the future. On the bad days, you feel as though you can't even breathe and plummet into a panic attack unable to imagine a future without your ex. And while this may look to you like "proof' that you loved your ex a lot, in reality it's proof that your life is a giant gaping hole that nothing can ever fill, not even your ex and that in itself makes you so sad -- if it doesn't it should.

3. Refusing to be emotionally honest with yourself and admit that the painful emotions you feel are real -- and they are yours. This is so often the case with people who sort of regard emotions such as anger, sorrow, regret or feelings of loss as abnormal, unacceptable and incorrect. Because you feel disadvantaged for having these emotions you either fear feeling these emotions believing you'll lose control to the emotions or because you do not want to admit that you are "less than perfect" you try to "bottle" up and end up effectively putting emotional processing on hold. That's a lot of self-imprisoning just to avoid a few minutes of "emotional weakness"!

4. Refusing to accept reality and unwilling to see how you are creating your own personal and relationship problems. When you see your problems as caused by external factors (such as, the man obviously has a problem with commitment, the woman is damaged by this or that, if only he/she would do this I'd not have done that, if only our society was more..., it's my parents fault I am this way. etc) you find yourself constantly looking for someone or some situation to blame -- your ex, his or her friends, the new man or woman in your ex's life etc. Blaming feeds your pain with emotional poison.

5. Dwelling on feeling guilty about past actions and beating the hell out of yourself for things that you said that shouldn't have been said and things that you did that now looking back are really really stupid. There is a huge difference between taking responsibility for your actions and constantly reminding yourself that you are a failure and will probably always be a failure because you have nothing to offer. Refusing to forgive yourself keeps you locked up in the past and unable to let go.

6. Always thinking of the worst, cursing your fate and constantly complaining about anything and everything. It's true that break-ups challenge your picture of how the world operates so much that the experience eventually erodes optimism and replaces it with negativity, hopelessness and powerlessness. But just trying to make it through each day but not actually living it or even looking forward to the next grinds down your ability to even enjoy the little things in life. You just want to give up and go stick your head in sand -- as you wait for the world to change.

7. Taking almost everything very personally and being hyper-vigilant to the most innocent of remarks. When you've been rejected and still feel that rejection, you become extremely suspicious of other's intentions and become overly "rejection sensitive". Often times you feel rejection even where there is no rejection, and you may find that you react hastily in an attempt to reject before you are rejected. This drives most good people and things out of your life adding to the feeling that you're being re-rejected again and again. You feel like there is just no end to the painful reality of being unwanted.

8. Wallowing in self-pity and actually trying to solicit "pity" from anyone you think might give it to you. After the break-up you want all your mutual friends to know how badly you are hurting (and may be, just may be they'll mention it to your ex in away that will make him or her reconsider the break-up). But here is the problem, these people may not care, may not want to be involved and may actually think the break-up was a good thing for one or both of you. So when you don't get the response you expected, you feel like nobody really "cares", and sometimes you project your pain onto these people who may then react in ways that further hurt you. So now you are not only hurt by your ex's actions, you are hurt by theirs too -- talk about piling pain on top of pain.

9. Listening and taking advice from people who themselves have gone though a break-up experience and remained bitter, angry, resentful, hateful and even vengeful. It's so sad that in our society today the voices of bitterness and hate are louder and overabundant. Well, that's the world we live in, but when you are already in pain, you are prepped for anything that temporary numbs the pain, and some advice -- however well-meaning -- can entrap you in loneliness and doom you to be chronically heartbroken.

10. Trying to get your ex back in a state of desperation, anger or emotional melt-down. A break-up usually brings out "the crazy" even in the most intelligent of people. All that begging, persuading, pleading that you have changed, obsessive calling, waylaying your ex, writing free verse poems of how the break-up is killing you, manipulating and even threatening your ex may supply you with a serious rush of adrenaline you need for day-to-day survival immediately after the break-up; but these actions also leave you so confused and so traumatized (let alone so mad) that you end up embodying the very real, very deep-rooted fears of total rejection that may haunt you for the rest of your miserable life.

I also want to add, these crazy things you do to try to get your ex back are a tactical mistake if you are thinking about future reconciliation. That crazy like a fox behaviour makes your ex over sensitive to you (not in a good way) and he or she will react to you with defensiveness, suspicion and/or anger.

As my mother has always said, how bad something is depends a lot on how bad you allow it to be. So if you feel your pain is over-extended or out-of-control, you should consider seeking help from outside sources, such as a counsellor, mentor or spiritual advisor. Someone not directly involved can bring a calmer perspective to the situation as well as new ideas, and insights that can help you feel normal again.

Yes, you can feel normal again but you've got to want it otherwise nothing will ever work. I've worked with clients who have made their pain their best companion. They seem so determined to hold onto their new found love (pain) so much that it's impossible to break-up the two. Don't let life pass you by!

Back Pain in Chest - It's Not a Heart Attack


When people experience chest pains, as many do in their lifetimes, the first thing that they think of is the dreaded heart attack. However, chest pain is actually quite common in many people, and is usually unrelated to heart issues completely. Back pain in chest areas is very common when muscles in the upper back are pulled, strained, or otherwise injured, and people should be aware that this can be a symptom of a back problem, not a heart attack. You can never be too careful with your health, but when you are otherwise healthy and have sudden back pain in chest areas, you need to rule out other symptoms quickly so that you know it is just back pain and not something more serious.

If your back pain in chest areas comes with nausea, dizziness, sweating, heart palpitations or a racing pulse, or pain in your arms or neck area, then you might want to consider the possibility that you're having a heart attack. If you experience chest pains with tightness, racing pulse, and other small symptoms, it might just be stress or an anxiety or panic attack. Furthermore, when the pain that you experience is just pain and comes with muscle spasms and back pain as well as chest pain, you probably pulled a muscle in your back and simply need to lie down and rest. While you should rest sore muscles and back injuries, you shouldn't avoid moving because the muscles will become stiff. Take it easy, use over the counter pain medication, and try heating pads or ice packs to get the best chances of relief. If that doesn't work, see a doctor.

Back pain in chest areas is easily treated and relieved usually, because it is often the result of pulled muscles. Unlike lower back pain, which can stem from many chronic conditions and much more severe situations, upper back pain that causes chest pain is fairly treatable and generally heals completely within 4 to 6 weeks. There is no need to have surgery, extensive procedures, or even expensive treatments done. As long as you can manage the pain yourself and don't have any other symptoms, you will be fine. If you feel safer talking to your doctor, or the pain increases or is severe to begin with, you should seek out medical treatment for your back pain.

Even though so many people experience back pain in chest areas, it's still scary for every person who is new to the experience. By taking the time to learn about all of the different types of pain and symptoms that you can experience, it can put you much more at ease when you lift something heavy, move wrong, or are involved in some activity that causes upper back pain and chest pain that might otherwise be mistaken for heart problems or other medical conditions. Make sure that you take the time to rule out the other symptoms, and try to remain calm during the experience so that you don't put yourself into an anxiety attack or heart attack by panicking before you take the time to determine what is wrong.

Once you have figured out the cause of your back pain in chest areas, you will be much better able to seek treatment, whether that is a home remedy of rest and heat or ice therapy, or physical therapy and prescription medications in severe cases. All that matters is that you take the time to rationally determine what is wrong so that you don't overreact to a situation that might be quite insignificant in the grand scheme of things. As long as you're careful and educated on the back pain that you are experiencing you will be fine. If you choose to see a doctor, or if the pain is severe enough that you cannot go without seeing a doctor, you should make sure that you disclose everything so that you get the proper treatment the first time around. It doesn't matter whether you visit your family doctor, a chiropractor, or even a physiatrist because they can all help develop a treatment to relieve your pain and heal your back problems when they happen in this area.

There Is Nothing Wrong With You


When you read the title of this article were you skeptical that there was some sort of catch to it. A catch that would prompt you to feel embarrassed or ashamed that not only was there something wrong with you, but it is really worse than you feared.

No doubt you have been admonished from early childhood with the statement: "What is wrong with you? Why did you do that? Why didn't you do that?" The reason may be illusive, but none-the-less there is a perfectly good reason why you do what you do--no matter how uncomfortable or unreasonable you or others may deem it to be, there are perfectly good reasons for your behavior and feelings.

The key to discovering the perfectly good reason is to go within to find the puzzle pieces and to sort out what has prompted you to do what you do--no matter how disquieting, uncomfortable or shameful.

Asking yourself the question, "What did I experience growing up and how did it impact me?--allows you to begin the process of discovering the source of your pain and to heal the wounds. When you stop believing there is something wrong with you and begin to make choices from a place of perfect freedom--amazing healing takes place.

Derealization and Depersonalization - Peculiar Bits of Business


The most troubling phenomena my panic and anxiety readers and clients report are the dissociative states, derealization and depersonalization (DD). I've written two Internet articles on DD; however, I wanted to share some fresh thoughts. Please understand my deep frustration in not being able to offer the solutions for which you may be looking. Unlike so many "authorities" that offer "miracle cures," I simply won't lie to you. But ongoing study and discussion of DD serves to increase awareness, which will ultimately lead to concrete relief alternatives.

DD are peculiar bits of business. I mean, they're the source of terror and desperation for those who didn't invite them to the dance, yet to a recreational drug user or one who enjoys altered perceptual states they're honored guests. Let me share a funny story. It was 1972 and I was a freshman at Michigan State. Well, one night the floating party rolled around to our dorm room and the joints began to circulate. I was a marijuana-virgin, but against my better judgment I gave it a go. In very short order I found myself in a dissociative state, running up to my older brother's fifth floor room to tell him what happened, hoping to find a measure of relief for my horror. He offered absolutely no comfort, as he tore out of the room in a mad dash for what he was sure would be some killer weed. By the way, what I had experienced wasn't foreign, as I began having bouts of derealization at age nine.

Possible Causes

Given that DD are the third most common psychiatric presentation, trumped only by anxiety and depression, a look-see into its generation is always worthwhile and interesting. Now, before we get started I want to point out that DD can present whenever there's a blockage of the pathway connecting perception and emotion. And the most common road blocks are a manifestation of a genetic predisposition, brain injury caused be internal or external factors, and emotional trauma and disorders. I'm going to list some common triggers of DD, but before I do you have to promise you won't obsess over the possibility of being a sufferer of anything on my list (unless, of course, you are). Okay, let's start with childhood emotional trauma, acute and chronic stress, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis (MS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), stroke, brain tumors, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). And then there's the legal and illegal substances merry-go-round, most commonly the use and abuse of marijuana, alcohol, caffeine, as well as recreational and prescription drugs. I'll also add to the list the prolonged use of benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, Valium, Klonopin, etc.). Heck, even the use of minocycline, a tetracycline antibiotic often used for the treatment of acne and lyme disease, can lead to DD. And go figure, in an almost cruel bit of turnabout, DD are classic withdrawal symptoms. Seems they present in the midst of a substance issue and on the way out the door.

Recent research has brought to light the potential involvement of cortisol in the generation of DD. Cortisol, the "stress hormone," is produced in the adrenal glands. It's best known for ramping-up our physical response to phenomena such as life stressors, trauma, excessive exercise, anxiety, and depression by passing word to the neurotransmitter and hormone norepinephrine (noradrenaline) to flip the switch on our sympathetic nervous system, our fight/flight headquarters. And, boom, off to the races we go. Obviously, situational secretion of cortisol is natural and necessary; however, when it's secreted in the presence of chronic stress all sorts of icky physical consequences may occur, as well as generalized anxiety and panic. And DD. The bottom-line is the researchers used a measurement instrument known as the "Dissociative Experiences Scale." And the subjects that tested high on the DD subscale had a much higher cortisol response to stimuli. So if the connection between stress, anxiety, and DD weren't already obvious to you, the research bangs the point home.

Anyone who's suffered from DD knows they can present in so many ways. Well, research is discovering that these variations can be traced to alterations in brain functioning. For example, the sensation of emotional detachment has been linked to lower levels of neural (having to do with neurons) response in the areas of the brain responsible for emotional feeling. And an increase in neural response was noted in the areas of the brain responsible for emotional regulation. For your reference and research purposes, key brain anatomy involved in emotion include the amygdala, anterior cingulate cortex, orbital prefrontal cortex, and the orbitofrontal cortex. What's interesting here is the connection between emotion (amygdala) and thought (anterior cingulate, orbital prefrontal, and orbitofrontal cortices), this having much to do with the pathway between perception and emotion I mentioned earlier. As long as we're discussing neurobiology, I'll also point out that research is showing that issues with glucose metabolism causes abnormal functioning of the visual, auditory, and somatosensory cortices. Well, given the fact that these areas process incoming stimuli, and our response, is it surprising that altered functioning may lead to DD?

Treatment Alternatives

Naturally, treatment selection for DD is driven by cause. I mean, if DD are presenting as a result of a stroke, the obvious treatment focus is going to be upon the aftermath of the brain accident. However, if the cause of DD is, say, childhood emotional trauma, psychotherapy is indicated. By the way, the insight-oriented and cognitive behavioral therapies, as well as hypnosis, have been successful in the management of DD. And there are any number of strategies and techniques, such as mindfulness, that you can implement on your own.

Now, on the medical side of the fence, scientists at one time found hope in naloxone (Narcan) for the treatment of depersonalization. Naloxone, an opioid receptor blocker, is typically used to treat opioid (drug category that includes heroin, morphine, oxycodone, etc.) overdoses, specifically addressing central nervous system and breathing complications. Well, naloxone very positively impacted depersonalization in the lab, though a cousin medication, naltrexone (Revia), didn't produce the same outcomes. It seems the success of naloxone involved the role of what's known as an endogenous opioid system in the generation of depersonalization. Giving this subject due consideration would take pages; so for now just know that it all has to do with the existence of opioid compounds (endorphins are one of these) throughout our central and peripheral nervous systems, which play a big role in regulating our responses to stress, including the management of cortisol. Also managed is the blunting of the distressing and emotional component of pain. Complicated stuff. Well, the naloxone mission was ultimately abandoned for a number of reasons, including the fact that it can only be administered intravenously.

Though not as yet FDA approved for the treatment of DD, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has shown some promise for relief. TMS, first developed in 1985, is a, well, gentle massage therapy for the brain. And it's given by short magnetic pulses, which come from an electromagnet placed on the scalp. The massage is actually limited to the cerebral cortex, which is the approximately one-tenth of an inch outer surface of the brain. Cool thing is the impact of TMS treatment has some staying power after its administration. TMS has been getting much more attention since the mid-1990's. Perhaps more to come.

Okay, let's wrap it up by talking meds. No doubt they've helped millions of DD sufferers, but I'll guarantee you that physicians and scientists don't really know the "hows and whys." At any rate, some of the meds that have provided assistance are the benzodiazepines lorazepam (Ativan), clorazepate (Tranxene), and alprazolam (Xanax). Then there are the tricyclic antidepressants amitriptyline (Elavil), doxepin (Sinequan), and desipramine (Norpramin). Of course, the SSRI's fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), and paroxetine (Paxil) made the cut. But, then again, they always do. The anticonvulsant/mood stabilizer, lamotrigine (Lamictal), used to get a lot of press with regard to DD relief; however, its stature has fallen a bit. Finally, there are the atypical antipsychotics such as aripiprazole (Abilify), quetiapine (Seroquel), and risperidone (Risperdal). Give the use of meds in combating DD a lot of thought, and ask very specific questions of your psychiatrist should you choose to pursue them.

So there you have it, some random thoughts regarding DD. As I implied from the get-go, I feel so badly that I can't bring you a cure; however, I sincerely believe the more we examine and discuss DD, the more likely concrete relief solutions will come to the fore.

Different Approaches of Chinese Medicine to Improve the Energy Balance!


The idea of energy balance has its basis in medical systems that have been utilized in the Far East for thousands of years. All of these systems assume that there is a subtle nonphysical energy that permeates and circulates throughout the body.

Traditional Chinese medicine calls this "chi".  The terms that best describe this energy in English would be "life force" or "vital energy". The difference in energy that you feel when you have the flu versus when you are healthy is an example of fluctuations in this type of energy.

In Chinese medicine, subtle energy is understood to be distributed throughout the body along channels called "meridians". One of the most important functions of all of the energy-balance approaches is to harmonize and optimize the "flow" of subtle energy by releasing blocks to that flow. Blocked energy leads to tension, anxiety, stress, and ultimately illness. In fact, Chinese medicine traces all disease back to various types and degrees of blockage in the flow of vital energy.

Regular practice of energy balance disciplines such as yoga or t´ai chi helps to release blocks to the natural flow of vitality. So does receiving treatments from healing arts that free up obstructions to subtle energy. This is particularly true for acupuncture, but also applies to various forms of massage and chiropractic treatment.

The invisible "energy body", sometimes called "subtle body", that is the focus of Eastern medicine is intimately related to the physical body. It´s thought to provide an energetic matrix or "template" for the physical body.

On a strictly physical level, energy balance practices help to relieve muscle tension, promote increased oxygenation of tissues and the brain, improve arterial circulation, promote elimination by the kidneys and colon, and stimulate increased production of hormones and neurotransmitters.

However, the fundamental purpose of the energy balance approaches is to promote mind-body integration a harmonious interdependence and balance among the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical aspects of your total being.

"Wholeness" is equated with wellness. To the extent you function in an integrated, whole manner, you can experience the fullness of your being and genuine health. To the extent that you are out of touch with the wholeness of your being, you remain out of harmony with yourself and are subject to stress and disorder, including anxiety.

T´AI CHI

T'ai chi is an ancient form of movement and exercise intended to unite body and mind. It is said to have originated when a thirteenth-century Taoist monk in China watched a serpent and a crane in battle. As the crane attacked the snake, the snake would smoothly move its position, never allowing the crane to touch it. From this scene the monk developed thirteen moves which have been augmented down through the centuries. Presently, t´ai chi is practiced by millions of people in China and is popular throughout the rest of the world.

T´ai chi can best be described as a form of moving meditation. It consists of a series of movements that proceed slowly and gracefully, flowing one into another. These movements strengthen and ground the body while promoting the flow of "chi" or life force. Students say that it teaches qualities of fluidity and grace; qualities that can extend to the way you live your entire life.

Because the movements are done slowly, it also teaches you how to slow down, both in your body and your mind. Like meditation, it helps you to achieve serenity, clarity, and concentration. Unlike meditation, however, it instills an ability to carry mental poise and concentration into movement.

Like yoga, t´ai chi helps you to work through blocks to the flow of your life energy, along with promoting physical benefits such as opening the joints, especially the knees, strengthening the spine and lower back, and massaging the internal organs. Because it´s practiced with your entire body and with full presence of mind, t´ai chi is a very practical and effective way to foster mind-body integration.

You can find t´ai chi classes offered at some health clubs as well as some martial arts schools, though t´ai chi is generally not used as a form of self-defense. If classes are not available in your area, there are several excellent videos that teach the basic movements. Because it promotes the flow of "chi," the exercise is sometimes prescribed as an adjunct to acupuncture treatments.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture originated as a healing modality in China about three thousand years ago. Currently it´s practiced in most advanced countries throughout the world. As with t´ai chi, it´s based on the assumption that health is determined by the free and proper flow of chi, the vital or subtle energy that pervades all living things. Chi flows along channels in the body called meridians, each of which is linked to a specific organ.

When the flow of energy is neither restricted nor excessive, the individual enjoys good health. If the energy flow is unbalanced in either direction, both physical and mental symptoms of distress or disease may result. For example, fear is understood to be due to blocked or excessive energy flow along the kidney meridian. Acupuncture treatments that aim to balance the kidney meridian, and other supporting meridians can help to relieve fear fullness.

In an acupuncture treatment, the acupuncturist inserts thin needles at specific points in the body. Most people feel only a slight prick or no pain at all from the procedure. Typically the needles are left in place for twenty to thirty minutes, after which it´s common to feel very relaxed and rejuvenated. Repeated treatments, twice a week for a few weeks, are often needed to correct an ailment such as migraine headaches, allergies or back pain.

If you wish to utilize acupuncture to help anxiety, regular treatments on a weekly or biweekly basis for several months are advised. Often the acupuncturist will provide herbs in the form of teas or capsules to use at home to enhance the effects of the treatments.

For people who are uncomfortable with the use of needles acupressure may be a viable alternative. Acupressure, and its cousin Shiatsu, rely on the same principles as acupuncture. However, energy flow and balance along the meridians is promoted by manual pressure rather than needles. Acupressure is a simple and inexpensive form of energy balance practiced by many massage therapists. In fact, you can utilize acupressure on your own.

CHIROPRACTIC

Most people think of chiropractic as a healing art that aims to relieve back pain induced by stress or injury. At a more basic level, though, chiropractic strives to promote health by optimizing the flow of nerve impulses up and down the spine and to other parts of the body. Because of the various stresses to which the spine is subject, individual vertebrae can move out of alignment.

These misaligned vertebrae block the flow of nerve impulses between the brain and body as well as between the spinal cord and various bodily organs. When nerve transmission to a specific organ is reduced or limited the organ is likely to dysfunction and might produce symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to illness. Misalignments of the spine may be caused by injury, but most frequently they are caused by stress.

Muscles tightened under chronic stress tend to pull the vertebrae out of alignment. Even if the muscle tension is relieved through exercise or massage, the spinal vertebrae may not easily resume their normal configuration. Thus a chiropractor seeks to identify and correct vertebral misalignments in order to promote optimal nervous system function and thereby functional integrity of the body as a whole.

Chiropractic can be a helpful strategy for relieving chronic tension, whether or not accompanied by pain. An occasional visit to a chiropractor is likely to improve your overall experience of well-being. In locating a qualified chiropractor in your area, try to get a referral from a friend or relative. If you prefer not to receive direct manipulations to the spine, there are some chiropractors who practice a nonmanipulative form of adjustment sometimes referred to as "gentle chiropractic".

MASSAGE

Therapeutic massage is a healing art designed to promote deep relaxation through skillful manipulation of muscles and soft body tissues. Professional massage therapists usually obtain 500-1,000 hours of formal training in anatomy, physiology, and various forms of bodywork including Swedish massage, deep tissue work, reflexology, acupressure, and Shiatsu.

Receiving a one-hour massage every week, or even twice per month, can promote deep relaxation by relieving chronic muscle tension that you may have been holding in your body for a long time. Massage can enhance and deepen the benefits you obtain from practicing progressive muscle relaxation. PMR tends to release acute superficial tension in the outer muscles of your arms, legs, neck, and torso.

Massage, particularly "deep tissue" massage, can undo chronic long-standing tension held in the deeper muscles of the body. In addition to releasing muscle tension, massage can help cleanse your body of toxic accumulations by promoting lymphatic circulation and mobilizing a sluggish colon.

On a more psychological level, receiving a massage is a wonderful way to nurture yourself if you feel stressed. Massage can also provide a corrective emotional experience for survivors of abuse. If you grew up in a dysfunctional family where you either weren´t touched or were touched inappropriately, massage can help you work through any painful feelings or resistance around being touched, increasing your ease with what is an innate need for all human beings.

There are several types of massage to choose from. Swedish massage, developed by Peter Ling in the 1800s, uses kneading, stroking, and shaking to induce the body to relax. This is the most common type of massage practiced. Deep tissue massage involves greater pressure on deeper muscles than Swedish massage and generally focuses on specific problem areas.

Neuromuscular massage is a form of deep tissue massage that works with specific "trigger points" to release chronically tight muscles. Acupressure, while certainly relaxing, intentionally seeks to promote enhanced energy balance. Through firm pressure applied to specific points for three to ten seconds each, acupressure strives to release blocks to the flow of subtle energy through the acupuncture meridians.

I was prescribed drug-based treatments. But I found my anxiety disorder drug treatment had basically 'duped' my brain into a better state. Tranquillisers - Such as Benzodiazepine. Short-term stress-related anxieties. Risk of addiction if taken for long periods.

Buspirone - Can relieve anxiety over time but has side effects. Different from Benzodiazepines.

Antidepressants - Such as Seroxat, Sereupin. Three month course, but may require longer.

Beta-blockers - Such as Inderal or Lopressor only relieves physical symptoms of anxiety such as shaking. Doesn't affect psychological symptoms. Not suitable if asthmatic or diabetic.

The above can help to a degree, but the thought of taking these for lengthy periods scared me stiff. I felt like I was slipping back to where I started; I felt dependent on them. Some of the drug treatments listed can be addictive and also have otherside effects, such as Buspirone which causes nausea, headache and nervousness. So I took another, more natural route to overcoming anxiety attacks...
