Davidson basketball: Kauffman finds comfort level on the girls ' team

Hilliard Davidson High School senior Rebekah Kauffman was blessed with good health during the first six years of his career in basketball, but her fortunes changed during the summer of 2007 when she competes for the Columbus Lady Rage AAU basketball team.

When you run the Court during the game, would suddenly feel as though Kauffman she couldn't breathe, and eventually would start to feel dizzy.

When she had a similar experience while shooting baskets in her driveway one night, Dad Randy, drove her to an urgent care facility. After several medical tests revealed she does not have any physical problems, she was eventually diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, caused by her to have panic attacks.

During panic attacks were filled with the Kauffman view irrational fear that she would stop breathing, collapse and die.

-I was surprised to hear that I had this mental illness, but I was also relieved to find a diagnosis of what was wrong with me, "said Kauffman. "When I have a panic attack, I lose my sense of reality and what is happening around me. I have no idea if people talk to me or at least I remember speaking with people when it is over. Sometimes it gives me a case of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), and you begin around and plays with his band in the hair. For some reason, I have to do it to give myself a distraction and make yourself feel better. "

Kauffman began to see a psychologist once a week and a Physiatrist once every six weeks to fight her phobia.

During the several months she started with antidepressant medication, work with breathing exercises and learn to talk yourself through the panic attacks.

Kauffman recovered well enough to play basketball for Davidson's junior varsity and freshman team, but the first half of her freshman season was hampered by a strained right rotator cuff and her season ended when she suffered a fractured right wrist.

However, trained hard during Kauffman off-season and became the Davidsons begins shooting guard the following season.

As a sophomore, she did a program-record six 3-pointers to en 54-39 loss at Watterson. This season, she averaged 7.1 credits and did 37 3-pointers, a shy in program record that Melissa Howe, 2001.

-My anxiety levels improved considerably and I have been able to concentrate on basketball a lot more during my second year, "said Kauffman. "It was cool to be a starter and I had a lot of fun and had my best season in basketball. I had a good summer and was feeling so well that I had taken out my medication. "

Kauffman on average five points through the first three games of her junior season before hitting a shooting slump and suffers a serious panic attack during the Davidsons sixth game dec 18, 2009, in downtown crossing.

-When I sat on the bench, I felt dizzy and lightheaded and I could feel the anxiety comes back and unable to stop it, "she said." in the locker room, my coach (Lisa Cady) were able to say I find it hard to breathe and on the way to the bus had a full-blown panic attack and had to go home with my parents. My season went downhill after that. (1 feb) I had another panic attack while I am in bed and it lasted for three or four hours because I was unable to stop it, and I missed school the rest of the week. "

With her confidence shaken, Kauffman played sparingly and only scored 16 points above the Davidsons last 15 games.

"What she is going through is hard to understand because there is a broken bone that you can put a cast on," said Randy Kauffman. "At best, it was scary because it is not something that can be fixed with a pill or a logical discussion. These thoughts just take over and it snowballs. It looks like her racing so fast that she is unable to focus, and it creates physical reactions in her body that she does not sit still or regulate. "

In February 2010, Kauffman started with another antidepressant and continued working on her breathing exercises with her psychologist. She had no more panic attacks throughout the last spring and a last summer, but in the fall, they had stopped completely.

Kauffman played in first 11 games each Davidsons this season and has not experienced a panic attack.

-Every day is still a challenge for me, especially in practice because on the back of me, I am concerned if it happens again, "she said." a few times, I've wondered why I keep putting himself through this, but I love this game too much to give up and I will not give in to my fears.

"I am so proud of myself that I have been able to work through my problem and that I continue to work through them today.

First year coach joy Taylor said Kauffman is a quiet leader who is respected by all her teammates.

-The fact that she has the play hard each day shows a lot about her character, because the simple route, had to say, "this frightens me, and I'm done with it." But she has been working through their anxiety and fear, and she is a great contributor and leader, "Taylor said. "She has been a full-scale hustle for everything, and she is often the first person to get to the Loose balls. Defensively, he moves his feet well and get into the right position.

Kauffman has had only eight points this season, including a 3-pointer in both a 47-43 loss to Thomas Worthington on DEC 10, 51-42 victory over Hilliard Darby on January 13.

Taylor is optimistic that Kauffman will contribute more positively in the second half of the season.

"3-Pointer is her go to death, and if she is open, we want to take it because it is what she does best," Taylor said. "She has been a streaky shooter and in practice, when she begins to make shots, it's game over, so we just wait for her to break out as in any of our games.
